Get Involved
Thank you for your interest in tutoring with Schools of Hope! We are currently in 15 participating Grand Rapids Public Schools.
To being the tutoring process, please reference our volunteer qualifications and sign up for a training session.
Volunteer Requirements
- Age: High school students through senior citizens.
- Time: Volunteers must be willing to spend 30 minutes each week tutoring (if time doesn’t permit you to spend 30 minutes each week, two volunteers may share a child).
- Volunteer Availability: Tutoring sessions are held during the school day when school is in session.
- Location: Choose one of the participating Grand Rapids Public Schools locations.
- Legal: Volunteers must clear both Michigan State Police and Child Abuse and Neglect background checks.
- Training: Volunteers are required to attend one 2 hour training at no cost. NOTE: A valid drivers license or other photo ID is required to complete the training. In the event that GRPS closes due to inclement weather on the day of training or a tutoring session, these activities are also cancelled.
Can't Volunteer as a Tutor?
Many people would like to help Schools of Hope, but don't have the time to volunteer as a Schools of Hope tutor. There are many other ways you can help Schools of Hope. Among them are:
- Volunteer to be a Schools of Hope photographer
- Help us recruit volunteers
- Help us interview tutors and write their tutoring stories.
- Data entry
- Collect books
- Help with end of the year recognition events
If it is the weekly nature of volunteering that is keeping you away, many volunteers share a student so they do not have to come every week. We also accomodate "snow birds" who are away for part of the school year. Â
