Tocqueville Society

Committed to Making Our Community Stronger For All

In 1988, Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel established Heart of West Michigan United Way's Tocqueville Society, made up of local philanthropic leaders who generously commit to gifts of $10,000 or more annually. Its members have proven to be highly effective and highly esteemed United Way partners who play a critical role in our important work.

We are fortunate to have 97 individuals in West Michigan who demonstrate their commitment to our community in such a profound way. Every year, their gifts provide a solid foundation for United Way campaigns, leading the way in gift giving and influencing others to give as well. We could not do what we do, as effectively, without the Tocqueville Society's leadership and support.

Tocqueville Society Mission

  • Improve lives through philanthropic leadership that focuses on United Way's building blocks for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income that can support a family, and good health.
  • Communicating the vital role of personal action in creating long-lasting community change.
  • Creating the next generation of community leaders by connecting established Tocqueville Society members with West Michigan's millennial leadership.
