Research shows that students who do not read proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma. United Way's Schools of Hope Program pairs Volunteer Reading Tutors with students in grades 1-3 who are behind in reading to work one-on-one, once a week for 30 minutes.
