Whoever you are, when disaster strikes, you need help. Recently, a young mother with two toddlers lost nearly everything in a house fire. She and her children escaped the fire unharmed but with nothing except the pajamas they were wearing. As she watched their home burn, she feared for her small family. Had they just become homeless and alone?
First to the scene was American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids with shoes, warm clothes, toothbrushes, and other essentials. Through their support, she found Catholic Charities’ Baby Pantry, where she received diapers, wipes, toys and clothes. Catholic Charities then referred her family to United Way's 2-1-1 health and human service hotline, which connected her to several more organizations -- including the Salvation Army, Arbor Circle, and Family Promise -- and made sure she found the help she needed to get back on her feet.
It takes more than one resource to overcome a fire, loss of a job, or any other situation that could cause us to lose our footing. Who will be there when you need help? Who will you help today? Through getting involved with United Way, you can do your part to support our network of more than 50 local organizations who help 1 in 4 people in Kent County everyday.
