Find Where You're Needed Most
Our Volunteer Center connects individuals and groups who want to volunteer with local nonprofit organizations that need help. You can search our database of current volunteer opportunities to find an opportunity that fits your passion, skills, and time constraints. Once you find an opportunity, you can sign-up, track your service hours, and earn rewards for volunteering!
We're looking for 1,000 volunteers to help us assemble ready-to-prepare meals that will be distributed through Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank to food pantries to local families across the county. Our goal is to package 200,000 protein-enriched meals in two 2-hour shifts.
- Sign up for one of two shifts: 10am-12pm or 1pm-3pm.
- Groups are welcome & encouraged, but to allow for volunteers from across the community, we ask that group registrations do not exceed 12 individuals.
- Children 5+ welcome with adult supervision.
We put together these special guides to help you find opportunities to volunteer in whatever issue is closest to your heart.

Service Days and Events
We are at the forefront of helping companies find new ways to engage employees in volunteering. Throughout the year, we plan large-scale service events to bring corporate and community partners together to complete projects across Kent County.
January: MLK Day of Service. We organize corporate groups and individuals across the community to indoor and outdoor projects to honor the life & legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
June: Day of Action. On the longest day of the year (typically falling around the first day of summer), United Ways across the globe participate in service projects. We typically focus on a particular issue area or series of projects. For example, Book Buddies in 2014, Intern Connect Week of Action in 2015, and Food from the Heart in 2016.
September: Day of Caring is the largest corporate volunteering day in West Michigan and has been sponsored by Heart of West Michigan United Way more than 20 years. This service day provides the opportunity for employees to give back through service while exposing them to the needs of the community and accessible local agencies. Large groups of one-day volunteers also provide agencies the opportunity to quickly complete important projects that are difficult to accomplish throughout the year.
Collection drives are a popular way to help families in need. Several local organizations have online wishlists, and United Way runs community-wide collections throughout the year, including Stuff the Bus in August and Fill the Cart in March. Contact us to sign-up your workplace, school, or church as a donation site or for helpful tips on running your own collection drive.
Our Volunteer Center has implemented a unique and innovative partnership with the City of Grand Rapids through its MyGRCityPoints program. This first-of-its-kind, local rewards program gives Kent County residents the opportunity to earn points through volunteering. Points can then be redeemed for discounts on products and services at local businesses!
