Power outages, rain, and standing water couldn’t stop volunteers from hitting the streets – and parks and schools and thrift stores – on Day of Caring!
On Friday, September 13, more than 800 volunteers – ahem, superheroes – took part in Heart of West Michigan United Way’s Day of Caring, sponsored by Wolverine Worldwide. These volunteers came from 35 different companies and organizations, the highest number in our 20-plus-year Day of Caring History. They took on projects at 49 sites from Middleville to Kent City.
Volunteers from PriceWalgren and Macatawa Bank painted preschool classrooms at Steepletown Neighborhood Services. Teams from no less than five companies – Bissell, Cascade Engineering, Mercantile Bank, PNC Bank, and Warner Norcross + Judd – prepped meals and wrote birthday cards for seniors at Meals on Wheels Western Michigan. A crew from Amway built beds for foster kids at Bethany Christian Services, while handy teams from Century A&E, Steelcase, and Wolverine Worldwide constructed playground equipment and repaired a boardwalk at Howard Christensen Nature Center.
This quote from Bruce at Howard Christensen says it all:
“The United Way Day of Caring has been wonderful for us. We run on just a very small volunteer staff, so to have all these people come out and work for us is just wonderful. It means a huge amount to us. Thank you so much.”
