RECOGNIZING STUDENTS WHO BENEFIT THEIR COMMUNITY THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM.

 

Student Service Awards recognize high school students who benefit their community through service and volunteerism throughout the course of their education.

Review the materials below to prepare for the application process. You’re able to apply when you have completed enough hours for our service levels; Bronze (25 Hours), Silver (50 Hours), Gold (75 Hours).

1. Volunteer Activity Report

The Volunteer Activity Report will track your volunteer time and activities. You’ll need a signature from organizations, verifying your volunteer time to qualify.

Activities that are directly linked to providing needed services or bettering the community in which you live are acceptable. If you receive any type of compensation, your activity is not considered volunteering.

2. Reflective Essay

This essay gives us an opportunity to hear directly from you about your experiences as a student volunteer. Consider the types of organization’s you’ve served with and what impact you have made, what have you learned, do you plans to continue volunteering?

3. Photo Permissions

To recognize your accomplishments we may share a photo with a description of your service. Sign this photo waiver if you are 18 years old or older, if not, please have a parent or guardian sign it.

 

Get Involved

There are many ways to get volunteer hours, more than 300 agencies across Kent County use our website to share their volunteer and donation needs. You can search our database of current volunteer opportunities to find one that fits your passion, skills, and time constraints.

Additional Awards

 

There are many other local and national awards to consider. Most offer scholarships, celebrations, and/or recognition for your services. If you are interested in being nominated for any of these reach out to thevolunteercenter@hwmuw.org.

Local

  • Michigan Governor Youth Service Awards- There are three awards for students serving 50-400 hours. Apply by April 30th.

  • Student Recognition Award- Awards are given for a combination of academic, athletic, and community service excellence.

  • SET Education Fund- Founded to provide scholarships to Michigan residents attending Michigan colleges. Seeking community-minded individuals that have excelled scholastically while volunteering their time to help others. Apply by May 1st.

National

  • Everyday Young Heroes- Young people, ages 5-25, who are improving their communities through service to others and making significant progress in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

  • Princeton Prize in Race Relations- Recognizes and rewards high school students who, through their volunteer activities, have undertaken significant efforts to advance racial equity and understanding in their schools or communities..
