Supporting Stability Before Crisis: A Proactive Approach to Housing Security

Unexpected life events can place even the most prepared households in vulnerable situations. This was the case for a Family Stability client who found herself facing housing insecurity for the first time after undergoing surgery and taking time off work to recover.

During her medical leave, the client was unaware of recent changes to her employer-sponsored medical insurance. She selected the voluntary disability option, not realizing it would delay her income replacement. As a result, she went more than 30 days without pay. While the issue was eventually resolved, the impact was immediate and significant.

Determined to remain responsible for her household, the client used all of her available savings to cover rent and essential monthly expenses. When the next month approached, she no longer had the income needed to pay rent. Having never experienced housing instability before, she did what many families do—she reached out for help.

Several assistance programs could not support her because she was not yet in the eviction process. Although discouraging, she continued advocating for herself and contacted 211. Through that call, she was referred to the Family Stability Program.

Because our program works upstream, we were able to step in before an eviction was filed. The client qualified for support, allowing us to address the immediate housing concern and prevent a crisis from escalating. This early intervention preserved her housing, reduced stress during her recovery, and allowed her to focus on returning to work and restoring financial stability.

This story is a powerful reminder that housing stability efforts are most effective when they prioritize prevention over reaction. Families should not have to wait to be in court to for eviction to receive help. By working proactively and meeting clients where they are, we can protect housing, preserve dignity, and support long-term stability.
