2026 VITA Impact Report
More Families. More Refunds. More Financial Stability: VITA’S 2026 Tax Season
For many people, tax season can feel overwhelming. But for one local resident who visited the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site at Grand Valley State University, it became something entirely different.
They came expecting help filing a tax return. Instead, they found a welcoming team of volunteers who made the process simple, professional, and stress-free.
A student volunteer carefully prepared the return while a faculty member completed a thorough quality review to ensure everything was accurate. The taxpayer was impressed by the kindness, knowledge, and attention to detail throughout the process.
Just over a week later, their refund arrived—money that could be put toward everyday expenses and financial goals. And because VITA services are completely free, they also avoided paying hundreds of dollars in tax preparation fees.
It's one story among thousands, but it reflects what VITA is all about: helping people keep more of the money they've earned while providing trusted support every step of the way.

Building Financial Security Across West Michigan
For more than two decades, Heart of West Michigan United Way's VITA program has helped individuals and families access free, IRS-certified tax preparation services. Every refund represents more than a completed tax return—it helps families catch up on bills, reduce debt, build savings, or invest in their future.
By removing the cost of tax preparation and ensuring taxpayers receive the credits they've earned, VITA puts more money back into household budgets while strengthening our local economy.
Volunteers Make it Possible
Behind every return is a team of dedicated volunteers who believe everyone deserves access to trustworthy financial support.
From first-time tax preparers to experienced site coordinators, these volunteers give their time and expertise to ensure every client is treated with dignity, accuracy, and care. Their commitment transforms what can be a stressful experience into one that leaves people feeling confident and supported.
Thank You
To every volunteer, site host, community partner, and supporter who made this incredible tax season possible—thank you. Together, we're helping thousands of West Michigan families build greater financial stability, one tax return at a time.
