A Prescription for Stability: Rx Kids Is Coming to 49507
There's a window in pregnancy and early infancy when everything is supposed to be beautiful — and for too many families in West Michigan, it's also when everything gets hardest.
Income drops. Expenses don't. The car still needs gas. The apartment still needs rent. Diapers and formula don't care about due dates. And the financial stress of that stretch doesn't stay separate from the health outcomes of a pregnancy. It shows up in birth weight, in preterm delivery rates, in NICU admissions.
We've known this for years. Now, West Michigan has a tool to do something about it.
Rx Kids is coming to Grand Rapids' 49507 ZIP code this July.
The nation's first community-wide prenatal and infant cash prescription program — led by Michigan State University — opens enrollment July 1 for eligible families in Kent County's 49507. [1]
For approximately 640 families who welcome a new baby in 49507 each year, Rx Kids provides direct economic support — helping cover the essentials like diapers, formula, rent, and transportation to prenatal care. [2] Families receive $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 per month for the first six months of a child's life. [1]
No strings attached. No restrictions on how to spend it. Just the trust that families know what their families need.
This isn't charity. It's a corrective.
The families Rx Kids reaches aren't struggling because they've done something wrong. 34% of West Michigan households live below the ALICE threshold — Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. Working families. Families contributing to this community who can't absorb one emergency without losing ground. Pregnancy and the months after birth are among the most financially vulnerable stretches of a working family's life. Rx Kids is designed specifically for that moment.
And we know it works.
A study published in The Lancet Public Health found that following Rx Kids' launch in Flint, preterm birth rates fell an estimated 18%, low birthweight declined 27%, and NICU admissions dropped roughly 29% — translating into significant healthcare savings and, more importantly, healthier babies. [3] This is among the first population-level studies in the United States to show that direct economic support during pregnancy improves birth outcomes at scale. [3]
That's not a marginal result. That's what it looks like when a community decides to invest upstream.

At Heart of West Michigan United Way, our role isn't to run every solution — it's to recognize which solutions are worth backing and make sure they reach the people who need them most.
When we evaluated Rx Kids, what we saw was a program built on rigorous evidence, designed for the specific pressure point where working families are most vulnerable, and proven to produce population-level results. That's precisely the kind of investment our donors make possible. Not a program that fills a gap temporarily — a model that changes outcomes permanently for families in our community.
Rx Kids in 49507 is led by Michigan State University and administered by GiveDirectly. First Steps Kent serves as the local Community Champion, supporting outreach, engagement, and celebration. The Grand Rapids Community Foundation serves as the local fiduciary. [4] Heart of West Michigan United Way is a funding partner — one of a coalition of community investors that recognized this as too important not to support.

Eligible participants must live in the 49507 ZIP code and be at least 16 weeks pregnant, or have a newborn born on or after July 1, 2026. [1] The application takes less than 20 minutes, is available in multiple languages, and is designed so that participation does not affect eligibility for other public benefits. [1]
